Reflexology

A Brief History of Reflexology

The art of reflexology dates back to Ancient Egypt, India and China, this therapy was not introduced to the West until Dr William Fitzgerald developed 'Zone therapy'. He believed that reflex areas on the feet and hands were linked to other areas and organs of the body within the same zone. In the 1930's, Eunice Ingham further developed this zone theory into what is known as reflexology. Her opinion was that congestion or tension in any part of the foot is mirrored in the corresponding part of the body.

What is Reflexology and What are the Benefits?

It is a science based on the principle that there are reflexes in the hands and feet which correspond to all organs, glands and body parts. Reflexology is a method for activating the healing powers of the body. Reflexology is technique of using the thumbs and fingers on these reflexes. Reflexology is a complimentary therapy which sits very well alongside orthodox medicine. Reflexology is a preventive healthcare.

Reflexology is an ancient therapy which has been practiced for over 5000 years and we believe that working these points or areas can help aid relaxation, improve mood, release tension, enhance sleep and can generally help improve wellbeing; allowing us to cope better with the stresses that life can bring.

- Helps to relax body, mind and soul

- To relieve stress and muscular tension
- To improve blood supply and circulation.
- To encourage the unblocking of energy/nerve pathways.
- To encourage the body's natural healing processes.
- To encourage homeostasis. - (homeostasis - balance, equilibrium or the fine tuning of bodily functions)
- To cleanse the body of toxins.
- To revitalize energy.
- To stimulate creativity and productivity.

How does Reflexology Works?

There are 7,000 plus nerve endings on the feet which feedback information to the spinal cord and the brain. The stimulation brings about the relaxation response via the parasympathetic nervous system, providing the right environment for change to take place for the patient.

What Reflexology is NOT?

It is not a foot massage nor a medical treatment. Reflexologists do not diagnose illness nor do they practice medicine.

We spend extra time working the reflex area on the foot that corresponds to the body part that is troubled, but our
work cannot be classified as medical treatment as such.

The Reflexologists is a channel of healing.

The laying on hands and the specific techniques or applying pressure to the feet create the channels for healing energy circulate to all parts of the body. No instruments or gadgets are ever used, only the hands!

Reflexology cannot harm the system, it simply brings it back into balance.
